Monthly Winter Rentals in the Coachella Valley

Every year from about January through March, the desert fills with people who have worked out that a month here costs less than a month of winter at home and feels considerably better. A monthly stay is a different thing from a week, though — different pricing, different questions, and a few things that catch people out. This is what we tell guests who ask us about a long winter stay.

We manage ten homes across Palm Springs, Indio and Desert Hot Springs. A good number of them take stays of a month or longer in winter, and the ones that do book early.

How monthly pricing is different

The single most useful thing to understand is that a monthly rate is not the nightly rate multiplied by thirty. Long stays are priced differently because they cost us less to run: one clean instead of four, one check-in instead of four, and no gaps between bookings. That saving gets passed on, and the drop is usually substantial.

What is not always included in the headline figure is worth asking about directly:

  • Utilities. On a weekly booking, utilities are simply part of the rate. On a long stay, some homes cap them, because a month of running the air conditioning or the pool heater is a genuinely different number. Ask how your home handles it.
  • Pool heating across a whole month. This is the big one. Daily pool heating is reasonable for a week and becomes a serious figure over thirty or sixty days. Decide honestly whether you will swim. Some guests heat for the first week, discover they are using the spa rather than the pool, and switch it off.
  • Mid-stay cleaning. Most long stays include a clean at some interval. Confirm how often, and whether you need to be out of the house for it.

We are straightforward about all three if you ask. Message us with your dates and we will give you a full figure rather than a headline one.

Which homes work for a month, and which do not

A house that is delightful for a week is not automatically right for a month. What starts to matter on a long stay is storage, a proper work surface, laundry, and somewhere to be alone. What stops mattering is novelty.

  • Salida Del Sol in Desert Hot Springs is our most common long-stay suggestion. You get a pool, a turf yard and a mountain backdrop, and Desert Hot Springs is meaningfully cheaper than central Palm Springs, which matters a lot when you multiply it by thirty.
  • Indio Oasis Casita suits a couple: a separate casita with its own bedroom, kitchenette and dining nook, with a golf-course lake nearby.
  • Acacia Retreat in Palm Springs has four bedrooms and sleeps eight, with a heated pool and spa, a fire pit and hammocks. It is a good base if family will be rotating through across the season rather than all arriving at once.
  • Oasis Del Sol is the one for someone who wants the mid-century Palm Springs experience specifically, with in-water pool loungers and a fire pit.
  • Ultimate Outdoor Oasis and Sip Sip Away both have putting greens, which sounds like a gimmick for a week and turns out to matter on a long stay.

Not every home takes stays over 28 nights, and the ones that do are often spoken for by October. If you are reading this in November for a January stay, you are not too late, but you are not early either.

The questions worth asking before you commit

A month is a big commitment to a house you have seen in photographs. These are the things we would want to know in your position, and we will answer all of them honestly for any of our homes:

  • Where exactly is it? Desert neighbourhoods vary more than the photos suggest. Ask what is walkable, what needs a car, and how far the nearest grocery store is.
  • What is the internet actually like? If you are working, ask. We will not quote you a speed figure we have not measured, but we will tell you what we know and what other long-stay guests have reported. Our guide to booking a rental for a remote work week covers what to check.
  • Is there a desk, or just a dining table? For a month, this matters.
  • How does laundry work? In the house, and included?
  • What happens if something breaks on day 40? We cover our answer in what happens if something breaks during your stay. Short version: you get a real person, locally.
  • Can I see the live calendar? Yes — each property page has one, and for long stays it is the only reliable source. We will not print date windows here that go stale within a fortnight.

Why book a long stay direct

Long stays are where booking direct makes the most difference, for a reason that is purely arithmetic: the platform service fee is a percentage, so the bigger the booking, the bigger the gap. On a week in the desert the saving is worth having. On a sixty-night stay it is the price of several very good dinners out.

Booking direct with us saves about 10 percent compared with a flexible, refundable booking on the platforms, because there is no platform service fee. We should be straight with you about the one charge that does apply: card processing runs about 4.6 percent, and it is built into what you see at checkout rather than added at the end. We set the whole comparison out in how much do you actually save booking direct, including the case where the gap narrows.

The other long-stay advantage is simply that you are talking to the people who manage the house. Over a month you will want something — a different coffee maker, a recommendation, a parcel taken in. That is a conversation, not a support ticket.

Frequently asked questions

How much cheaper is a monthly rental than booking by the night?

Substantially, though the exact discount varies by home and by month. Long stays cost us less to run — one clean and one check-in instead of four — and that saving is reflected in the rate. Message us with your dates and we will give you a full figure including utilities and any pool heating.

Is pool heating included on a long winter stay?

No, pool heating is an added daily charge, and over a month or a season it becomes a significant figure. Many long-stay guests heat the pool for part of the stay or use the spa instead. We will quote the daily rate for your home before you book.

Which months are busiest for long stays in the desert?

January through March is the peak of the season, and the homes that accept stays of a month or longer are often booked by the autumn. November is not too late to book for January, but it is not early either.

Do all your desert homes accept stays of a month or more?

No. Some do and some do not, and it can vary by season. Tell us your dates and length of stay and we will tell you which homes are genuinely available rather than sending you a list to filter yourself.

Is there a mid-stay clean on a monthly booking?

Most long stays include cleaning at a set interval. The frequency varies by home, so confirm it with us before you book, along with whether you need to be out of the house while it happens.
