There’s nothing quite like celebrating the 4th of July on the Outer Banks — beach days, salty air, cookouts, and fireworks lighting up the sky over the ocean and sound.
And this year feels even more meaningful. July 4, 2026 marks America’s 250th anniversary of independence, making it a special time to celebrate one of the country’s most beloved summer traditions.
While America was not officially “founded” in the Outer Banks, the OBX does have a powerful place in America’s earliest story. Roanoke Island was home to England’s first colonies in the New World, and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is still known by the National Park Service as “England’s First Home in the New World.”
So whether you’re staying in Corolla, Duck, Nags Head, Manteo, Avon, or anywhere in between, here’s your Rather Be Properties guide to where to watch fireworks in the Outer Banks this 4th of July weekend.
Friday, July 3: Corolla Independence Day Celebration
For guests staying in Corolla or the northern beaches, this is one of the best family-friendly holiday events in the Outer Banks.
The Corolla Independence Day Celebration takes place at Historic Corolla Park on Friday, July 3, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, or until the conclusion of the fireworks show. The event includes free live music, food vendors, family activities, and fireworks at dusk over the Northern Outer Banks. Admission is free, and onsite parking begins at 3:00 PM on a first-come, first-served basis.
Best for: Corolla guests, families, soundside sunset views
Location: Historic Corolla Park

Friday, July 3: Duck 4th of July Parade & Community Celebration
Duck’s annual 4th of July Parade is a classic small-town OBX celebration and a great daytime option before the evening fireworks crowds begin.
The parade begins Friday, July 3, 2026 at 9:00 AM. The one-mile route starts at Scarborough Lane, travels toward the ocean, turns onto Ocean Way, continues onto Christopher Drive, and ends at Pamela Court. After the parade, guests can enjoy a community celebration at Duck Town Park with live music, cold refreshments, watermelon, and parade awards. Check the Town of Duck Events page for the latest event details.
Best for: Families staying in Duck, Corolla, Southern Shores, or Kitty Hawk
Location: Duck parade route + Duck Town Park
Time: 9:00 AM

The Town of Kill Devil Hills fireworks show is one of the most popular central OBX displays. Fireworks will launch from Avalon Pier on Saturday, July 4, 2026 from 9:15 PM to 9:40 PM. For America’s 250th anniversary, Dare A250 notes that the 2026 display will be bigger than before. Visitors are encouraged to watch from nearby beach accesses with chairs or blankets.

Nags Head will host its fireworks spectacular on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at Nags Head Fishing Pier near Milepost 11.5 on South Virginia Dare Trail. The display is expected to last about 25 minutes, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, July 5.
This is a great choice for guests staying in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, South Nags Head, or nearby Roanoke Island.
Best for: Nags Head and South Nags Head guests
Location: Nags Head Fishing Pier
Fireworks: 9:00 PM
Saturday, July 4: Manteo Waterfront Fireworks
For a charming waterfront celebration, head to Downtown Manteo. The Town of Manteo‘s 4th of July celebration includes festivities along the waterfront and a fireworks display scheduled for approximately 9:15 PM. The fireworks can be viewed from various areas around the waterfront.
Manteo is a great option if you want a small-town feel, waterfront views, restaurants nearby, and a slightly different experience from the beachside pier shows.
Best for: Roanoke Island guests, families, and anyone looking for a waterfront town atmosphere
Location: Downtown Manteo Waterfront
Fireworks: Around 9:15 PM
Saturday, July 4: Avon Pier Fireworks on Hatteras Island
Guests staying farther south on Hatteras Island can watch fireworks at Avon Pier. The Avon Pier fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday, July 4 at 9:15 PM, with fireworks lighting up the sky over the Atlantic. Avon Pier notes this is the only place on Hatteras Island to watch fireworks this 4th of July.
Bring your beach chairs, arrive early, and make an evening of it by the water.
Best for: Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo guests
Location: Avon Pier
Fireworks: 9:15 PM
Can You Set Off Your Own Fireworks in the Outer Banks?
In most areas, no — and it’s important for guests to know this before the holiday.
According to Dare County and North Carolina law, most consumer fireworks that launch into the air or explode are prohibited in Duck, Southern Shores, Nags Head, Manteo, Hatteras Island, and many areas of Dare County.
The safest and easiest option is to enjoy one of the professional fireworks shows listed above.
