Short version: Corolla if you want a big house with a private pool and things for kids to do. Duck if you want to walk to dinner and the boardwalk. Corolla: the default answer, and usually the right one
Corolla is the northernmost town on the paved road and the centre of gravity for large Outer Banks rentals. If you are travelling with a group, this is where the inventory is.
It is also where the things-to-do list is longest: the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Historic Corolla Village, the Whalehead Club, and the wild horse tours that run north of where the pavement ends. Guests at Heron Landing in Corolla Light Resort describe shops, ice cream, putt-putt, restaurants and a nature trail all within walking distance.

Duck: smaller, tighter, more walkable
Duck is the town people mean when they say the Outer Banks felt like a village. The Duck Boardwalk runs along the sound with shops and restaurants attached to it, and Duck Town Park sits behind. You can spend an evening on foot, which in Corolla you generally cannot.
Our home here is the Sound-Front Retreat with Infinity Pool — newly renovated, 5 bedrooms sleeping 15, with an infinity pool facing the Currituck Sound, a game room with pool and foosball tables, and multiple dining areas. One guest described it as beautifully situated on a bluff overlooking the sound, with stunning sunsets. 4.88 across 115 reviews.
The honest downside: we manage one home in Duck. If your dates are taken there, your choice in this town is made for you, and Corolla is fifteen minutes north.
Avon: for people who came for the beach
Avon is on Hatteras Island, which is a separate and considerably longer drive south past Nags Head and over the bridge. That drive is the filter. What is on the other side of it is a quieter, less developed stretch of coast where the beach is the plan every day and the surf fishing is serious.

Further south in Frisco, Pescadora is canal-front with a private boat dock. Guests catch fish and crabs off the dock all week without leaving the house.
Two things worth knowing before you pick Avon. First, at Hygge By The Sea there is a dune to cross to reach the beach — a guest said so in a review and we would rather you hear it from us. Second, Avon is convenient for what it has: guests mention multiple places to eat, bakeries and a Food Lion nearby. What it does not have is a boardwalk you can stroll to after dinner.
