Why does a pool matter more in the Outer Banks than people think?
Because the Atlantic does not always cooperate, and the pool is what saves the day when it does not.
Rough surfSome days the water is not toddler water, and no amount of wanting it to be changes that. A pool means the kids still swim.
Nap-adjacent afternoonsThis is the real one. Somebody is asleep upstairs from one until three. You cannot pack seven people into the car for the beach without waking them. A pool twenty feet from the back door means the rest of the group gets a full afternoon anyway.

Which pool is best for toddlers and small kids?
Harbor View, and it is not close.
Parents ask us about fencing more than any other amenity, and Harbor View is the home where the answer is a clean yes: the saltwater pool is privately fenced. It is 10 by 21 feet and 3 to 5 feet deep, so a standing adult is never out of their depth, and neither is a nine-year-old in the shallow end. It is also stocked with kid-friendly amenities and games, and a guest arriving late in the day noted how well stocked the house was.

Two of our Hatteras Island and Frisco homes belong in this conversation, and we want to be precise about what each actually has. And if the ocean is the whole point, the third one has the beach instead.
The honest limits of an OBX pool
Every one of these is true, and we would rather you hear it here than on arrival.
Heating availability differs by homeHygge on the Bay is the one described as having a heated pool. Do not assume the others heat, and do not assume a heated pool is warm in a 50-degree wind. Heating extends the season, it does not eliminate the weather.
Depth cuts both waysHarbor View's 3-to-5-foot saltwater pool is exactly right for kids and exactly wrong if you were hoping to swim laps or dive. Nobody is doing a workout in a 10 by 21 pool. If serious swimming is the goal, the Atlantic is a short walk away.

Sometimes, and it depends on the year and the home. Pools here are outdoor and seasonal. Ask us before you book if the pool is the deciding factor, because we would rather tell you no in advance than have you find out on arrival.
Which pool home is best for a large group?
Hygge on the Bay, Salt & Lighthouse and Baydream Believer all sleep 16 with a private pool and hot tub. Soundside Serenity at Cruz Bay sleeps 14 with direct pool access.
Do we save money booking direct instead of through Airbnb or VRBO?
Yes, about 10% on a like-for-like flexible booking, because there is no platform service fee. Booking direct does carry a card processing fee, which is a fraction of the platform's, and the roughly 10% figure accounts for it. Cancellation terms are published up front: 96% refund up to 14 days before arrival, 46% up to 7 days before, shown at checkout before you pay.
