If you want sunsets over the water, a pier to fish off and a calmer, quieter week, book the sound side. If you want the sound of surf through an open window and sand within a minute of the door, book the ocean side. That is the whole decision in two sentences, and most of what follows is just detail.
We manage homes on both sides of the Outer Banks, so we have no reason to talk you into one. Here is how they actually differ.
What does soundfront really mean in the Outer Banks?
The Outer Banks is a barrier island. The Atlantic is on the east side, the Currituck Sound on the west, and in Corolla and Duck you are rarely more than a few minutes from both. Soundfront means your house faces the sound: shallow, flat, protected water, west-facing, usually with a dock or pier.
What guests notice first is the light. One family at our Sound-Front Retreat with Infinity Pool in Duck put it plainly: the house sits on a bluff overlooking the sound, and the sunsets were stunning, with the infinity pool facing the same direction. That is not a coincidence of that one house. It is what west-facing water does every evening.
What guests notice second is how much wildlife shows up. A group at Hygge on the Bay in Corolla counted fish, deer, ducks, geese, birds and otters, all from the house, and spent the week fishing off the pier rather than driving anywhere.
Book the sound side if…
- You have a big group and want everyone in one house. Our largest homes are all soundfront. Baydream Believer (7 bedrooms, sleeps 16), Hygge on the Bay (7 bedrooms, sleeps 16), Salt and Lighthouse (7 bedrooms, sleeps 16, with an elevator) and Soundside Serenity at Cruz Bay (6 bedrooms, sleeps 14) all sit on or just off Cruz Bay Lane.
- You want a pool and a hot tub as part of the plan, not a bonus. Soundfront guests swim in the pool and boat, fish or paddle in the sound. Every home named above has a private pool and hot tub.
- You have small children. Flat water, no shore break, and a fenced pool deck is an easier week than a dune crossing four times a day.
- You care about the evening more than the morning. Sunsets over the sound, from your own deck.
Book the ocean side if…
- You want the beach to be the whole vacation. Hygge By The Sea in Avon sits behind the dunes with direct beach access and beach gear included, and Atlantic views from the deck.
- You are a smaller group. Hygge By The Sea sleeps 10 and King Tide Rising, also in Avon, sleeps 9 across three levels with a private hot tub and a short walk to the sand.
- You are here to fish the surf or the piers on Hatteras Island. Avon and Frisco are the base for that, not Corolla.
The honest catch on the ocean side: at Hygge By The Sea you cross a dune to reach the beach. A guest told us so in a review, and we would rather you hear it from us. It is a short crossing and it is worth it, but if you are carrying a toddler, a cooler and four chairs, factor it in. This is the kind of thing a listing page will not tell you and we will.
What about the homes that are neither?
Two of our OBX homes do not fit the split, and they are often the right answer anyway. Harbor View in Corolla is built around a private fenced saltwater pool and hot tub, minutes from the beach — a good pick if the pool is the point and you want a smaller house than the Cruz Bay group homes. Pescadora in Frisco is canal-front with a private boat dock, where guests catch fish and crabs off the dock all week.
Heron Landing in Corolla Light Resort splits the difference on purpose: guests describe it as perfectly situated between the sound and the beach, with shops, ice cream, putt-putt, restaurants and a nature trail within walking distance.

At the Cruz Bay Lane homes in Corolla, yes. Baydream Believer is about a five-minute walk to the beach, and guests at Soundside Serenity at Cruz Bay describe it as an easy walk if you choose. You are trading a direct dune crossing for a short stroll.
Which side has better sunsets?
The sound, without argument. The Currituck Sound sits to the west, so sunset happens over the water in front of you. On the ocean side the sun sets behind the house.
Can you swim in the Currituck Sound?
It is shallow, calm and warm, which is why families with small children like it, but it is not a substitute for the ocean. Most of our soundfront homes have a private pool and hot tub for exactly that reason.
Which soundfront home is best for a group of sixteen?
Baydream Believer, Hygge on the Bay and Salt and Lighthouse each sleep sixteen, and Heron Landing sleeps sixteen in Corolla Light Resort. Salt and Lighthouse has an elevator, which matters in a three-story house.
