If you are planning a family trip to Indio, the honest answer to “where should we stay?” is: somewhere with a private pool, a real kitchen, and enough bedrooms that nobody is sleeping on a couch. Hotels in the Coachella Valley will give you two queen beds and a parking lot. A vacation rental gives your family the thing that actually makes a desert trip work — a backyard you never have to leave.
We are Al and Elissa, and we manage five homes right here in Indio. We have hosted hundreds of families in them. So instead of a generic roundup, here is a straight comparison of which home fits which kind of family, plus what we have learned about visiting Indio with kids in tow.
Why do families choose Indio over Palm Springs?
Indio sits at the eastern end of the Coachella Valley, about twenty minutes past Palm Springs proper. Two things make it a smart base for families.
You get more house for your money. The same budget that buys a two-bedroom condo closer to downtown Palm Springs often buys a three- or four-bedroom home with a private pool out here.
It is quieter. Indio’s residential neighborhoods and country-club communities are calm in the evenings, which matters a great deal when you are trying to get small kids to sleep by eight.
You are still close to everything. Empire Polo Club — home of the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals — is minutes away. Shields Date Garden is a genuinely charming stop with a date shake that kids love. Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, the Indio Historical Museum, and the Coachella Valley Preserve are all short drives, and the hiking trails around the valley are a good way to burn off morning energy before the heat sets in.
The best Indio vacation rentals for families
For big multi-generational groups: Coachella Sol Haus
Six bedrooms, three baths, sleeps twelve. This is the one we send large families to. There is a heated pool, a hot tub, a fire pit, and a covered patio, plus a loft with an 85-inch TV that reliably becomes the kids’ headquarters. The chef’s kitchen means you can actually cook for twelve rather than eating out three times a day. It holds a perfect 5.0 rating across 94 reviews.
For families who want built-in entertainment: The Game Table Getaway
Three bedrooms, three baths, sleeps eight. The draw here is the game room with an Arcade1Up Infinity Game Table — the kind of thing that turns a rainy hour or a too-hot afternoon into the best part of the day. Private pool and spa, BBQ grill, and a primary suite with direct pool access. Guests also get community pools, tennis, and golf. Close to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and valley hiking trails. Rated 4.86.
For classic desert charm: Coachella Casa
Three bedrooms, two baths, sleeps six. A Spanish-style home with a palm-lined private yard, pool, and hot tub. The living room has a fireplace, which sounds odd for the desert until you have felt a January night out here. The primary suite opens onto the backyard, and there is a pack and play for the littlest travelers. Minutes from Coachella and Stagecoach grounds. Rated 4.75.
For country-club amenities: Indio Oasis House
Three bedrooms, two baths, sleeps ten. Set inside Indian Palms Country Club, with a new private pool (heating optional) and access to community golf, tennis, and pools. The sleeping arrangement is unusually flexible — a king suite with a twin rollaway, a queen with a twin pullout, a third queen, plus a sleeper sofa and pack and play. That is how it sleeps ten in three bedrooms. It backs onto a greenbelt with a stream and small lake, and it is 1.4 miles from Empire Polo Club. Rated 4.88 across 152 reviews.
For couples or a small add-on: Indio Oasis Casita
One bedroom, one bath, sleeps two. A quiet casita in Indian Palms with a queen bed, kitchenette, and in-unit laundry. Not a family home on its own — but if grandparents are joining and want their own space, or you are a couple traveling ahead of the group, it is ideal. Rated 4.91.
Three things we tell every family before they visit Indio
Get the pool heat. Desert nights cool off fast, and an unheated pool in March or November is refreshing in the way a cold plunge is refreshing. Heating is optional at our homes for a reason — most families with young kids want it.
Plan around the heat, not through it. Mornings and evenings outside, midday inside or in the water. Summer highs are serious. This is exactly why a private pool matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Check the festival calendar. Coachella and Stagecoach transform Indio for two weekends each spring. Wonderful if that is why you are coming, harder if you wanted quiet — and prices reflect it. Book early either way.
If you are weighing the desert against our other markets, our Coachella Casa introduction goes deeper on the Boho Bungalow side of the portfolio, and our pet-friendly stays guide covers travelling with the dog.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area of Indio to stay in with kids?
The country-club communities like Indian Palms are the easiest choice for families — quiet streets, community pools, golf and tennis on site, and still only a few minutes from Empire Polo Club and Indio’s restaurants.
Do Indio vacation rentals have private pools?
Most of ours do, and in the desert we would treat it as close to essential with children. Every one of our Indio family homes has a private pool, with optional heating.
How many people can a vacation rental in Indio sleep?
Ours range from two guests up to twelve. Coachella Sol Haus is the largest at six bedrooms and twelve guests.
Is Indio a good base for visiting Palm Springs and Joshua Tree?
Yes. Downtown Palm Springs is roughly twenty to thirty minutes west, and Joshua Tree National Park is an easy day trip. Plenty of families use Indio as a quieter, better-value home base and drive out from there.
Is it cheaper to book direct or through Airbnb?
Booking directly with us skips the platform’s guest service fee. Comparing like for like — same house, same dates, same flexible cancellation terms — that usually works out to around 10% off your total. Our full breakdown of booking direct versus Airbnb and VRBO walks through exactly what changes.
Ready to plan your Indio trip?
Every one of these homes is bookable directly with us — no platform service fee, and you will be talking to Al or Elissa, not a call center.
