What is there to do in Indio if you are not here for Coachella?
More than the internet suggests, but it helps to think in kinds of day rather than a list of attractions. Indio’s weather decides your itinerary, so we have organised it that way:
- Mornings — desert walks, the Preserve, trails, coffee in the backyard
- Mid-morning — golf and tennis, when the light is good and the heat has not landed
- A short, genuinely charming stop — Shields Date Garden
- Afternoons — museum, casino, indoors, water
- A whole day — Palm Springs or Joshua Tree
How should you plan a desert morning?
Early. Earlier than you think.
The Coachella Valley Preserve
The Preserve is the antidote to the idea that the desert is empty. Native fan palms grow in oases fed by underground water, and there are trails through and around them with real shade — a strange and lovely thing to find in the middle of dry country. It is quiet, it is close, and it is the single best first morning of an Indio trip.
Go at opening or shortly after. By late morning in the warm months the shade stops being enough.
Valley trails and a horse park
The valley’s hiking trails run up against the mountains on both sides, and every one of our Indio homes sits within easy reach of them. Guests at Coachella Sol Haus and The Game Table Getaway use them most.
There is also a desert horse park about ten minutes out — a guest at our Indio Oasis Casita mentioned it, and it is an easy detour if horses are your thing.
Where can you play golf and tennis in Indio?
This is Indio’s quiet advantage. The Coachella Valley is a golf destination that most visitors only think of as a music destination.
Indian Palms Country Club
Both Indio Oasis House and the Indio Oasis Casita sit inside Indian Palms Country Club, which puts golf, tennis and community pools on your doorstep — you walk out of the house and you are there. Guests describe the community as private and well kept. The Oasis House backs onto a greenbelt with a running stream and a small lake; one guest took their coffee out there every single morning.
The Game Table Getaway also comes with access to community pools, tennis and golf.
Indian Wells Tennis Garden
A short drive west, and worth knowing about whether or not there is tennis on. If you play, this is the reason to bring your racquet.
Is Shields Date Garden worth a stop?
Yes, and it is the recommendation that surprises people most.
Shields is a date farm with a garden of palms, dates for sale and a date shake that has been converting sceptics for decades. It takes half an hour if you are brisk, or a slow hour if you sit with the shake in the shade. It is the most Coachella Valley thing you can do that has nothing to do with music — this valley grew dates long before it grew festivals.
It is also five minutes of effort for a memory, which is the best ratio in travel.
What is there to do in Indio in the afternoon heat?
The Indio Historical Museum
Small, local, air-conditioned, and it explains the valley you are driving through — the water, the agriculture, the railroad, the date palms. If you have wondered why there are farms in a desert, this is where you find out.
Fantasy Springs Resort Casino
The reliable afternoon and evening option: gaming, food and entertainment under one roof, indoors, with no reason to look at a thermometer.
Empire Polo Club
You know it as the festival site. The rest of the year it is green lawns and long rows of palms, and it is mostly quiet. It is also the landmark our guests use for orientation: both Indio Oasis homes are 1.4 miles away, which is why they book so fast in festival season.
Your own backyard
Genuinely. Four of our five Indio homes have a private pool, and on a hot afternoon the most sensible plan in Indio is a cold pool and a shaded patio. Sol Haus has a covered patio and a fire pit; Coachella Casa has a palm-lined yard with a pool and hot tub.
What day trips can you take from Indio?
Palm Springs. A short drive up the valley, with the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the Art Museum, Indian Canyons and the Living Desert Zoo in reach. The Tramway is the classic hot-weather escape — you go up the mountain and the temperature falls away.
Joshua Tree National Park. A full day, and worth every hour. Bring far more water than you think you need, and go early.

When is the best time of year to visit Indio?
Autumn through spring, comfortably. Late autumn, winter and early spring are when the desert is at its best — warm days, cool nights, and the mountains sharp against the sky.
Two honest warnings.
Summer heat here is serious. It does not just make you uncomfortable; it reshapes the entire day. Midday in July and August is indoors time, full stop. Summer works if you plan around it — early mornings, long afternoons in the pool, evenings on the patio — and it is frustrating if you expected to sightsee at two in the afternoon.
Coachella and Stagecoach weekends transform the town. Traffic, energy, crowds, and prices all move. That is wonderful if it is why you came, and harder if you were hoping for quiet. If quiet is the goal, book any other weekend and you will have a different Indio entirely.
